Our qualified exercise physiologists understand that every individual’s journey is unique, which is why we take a holistic approach to exercise physiology that addresses your specific health goals, medical conditions, and lifestyle factors.
Our evidence-based approach to therapeutic exercise goes far beyond generic fitness programmes, incorporating the latest research in human physiology, biomechanics, and exercise science to create individualised treatment plans that deliver measurable results.
What is Exercise Physiology?
Exercise physiologists study the impact that exercise has on the body, the mechanisms by which exercise can reduce or reverse disease, support optimal health and aid in recovery.
We believe exercise is medicine and prescribe exercise to treat and/or prevent health conditions and injuries in the same way a doctor might prescribe medication. Our appointments include a thorough subjective and objective assessment so that our education, exercise delivery, and support is tailored to you and your goals – whether that is at the gym, finding a suitable class environment and/or at home.
Exercise Physiologists prescribe exercise to support:
- injury rehabilitation
- rehabilitation after surgery (e.g. following mastectomy)
- bone mineral density loss and/or prevention
- managing invisible illnesses & chronic conditions (EDS/hyper-mobility, POTS, long covid, CFS/ME or fibromyalgia)
- optimising sports and performance
At Sound CBR, our Exercise Physiologists have a special interest and extra training in treating Women’s Health conditions including:
- exercising during the different stages of pregnancy
- embarking on postpartum fitness
- navigating returning to exercise with pelvic floor concerns (including stress urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, weakness and/or hypertonicity)
- managing Endometriosis and/or PCOS through movement therapy and lifestyle changes
- embracing the changes of menopause, including bone mineral density loss and management of symptoms
- managing an invisible illness, such as EDS, POTS or fibromyalgia
- during and after treatments for cancer

Exercise physiology in Canberra has evolved significantly, with growing recognition of exercise as a powerful therapeutic tool. Our qualified exercise physiology Canberra practitioners hold university degrees in exercise physiology and maintain ongoing professional development to stay current with the latest research and treatment methodologies.
Unlike generic fitness training, exercise physiology Canberra services are specifically designed to address medical conditions, injury rehabilitation, and complex health challenges. Our practitioners work closely with your existing healthcare team, including doctors, physiotherapists, and specialists, to ensure your exercise programme complements your overall treatment plan.
The benefits of professional exercise physiology extend beyond physical improvements. Our clients often experience enhanced mental well-being, improved sleep quality, increased energy levels, and greater confidence in their ability to manage their health conditions independently.
Specialised Women’s Health Exercise Physiology Canberra
At Sound CBR, our exercise physiology Canberra team has developed particular expertise in women’s health conditions, recognising the unique physiological challenges women face throughout their lives. Our specialised approach to women’s health addresses hormonal fluctuations, reproductive health concerns, and gender-specific conditions that require tailored exercise interventions.
Our practitioners understand that women’s bodies respond differently to exercise at various life stages. From adolescence through menopause and beyond, hormonal changes significantly impact how the body adapts to physical activity. Our evidence-based exercise physiology programmes are specifically designed to work with these natural changes rather than against them.
We offer services for women’s health that include specialised treatment for endometriosis, PCOS, pregnancy-related conditions, postpartum recovery, and menopausal symptoms. Our practitioners are trained in the latest research on exercise and hormonal health, ensuring your treatment plan is both safe and effective for your specific circumstances.
While we specialise in women’s health, our exercise physiology services welcome clients of all genders and backgrounds. Everyone deserves access to high-quality, evidence-based exercise therapy, and our inclusive practice ensures all individuals receive the expert care they need to achieve their health and wellness goals.
The Science Behind Exercise Physiology
Exercise physiology is a specialised field that examines how the human body responds and adapts to physical activity. Our Canberra-based exercise physiologists utilise this knowledge to prescribe specific exercises that can prevent, treat, and manage various health conditions more effectively than traditional approaches alone.
Through comprehensive movement assessments and physiological testing, our exercise physiology practitioners identify the optimal exercise prescription for your unique circumstances. Whether you’re managing a chronic condition, recovering from surgery, or seeking to optimise your physical performance, our scientific approach ensures every movement is purposeful and effective.
What to expect at your first appointment with our Exercise Physiologists?
The initial consultation is a 1-hour appointment where the Exercise Physiologist will take a detailed history of your concerns and/or goals as well as all relevant history and activity habits. If attending for women’s health conditions, you will be asked relevant questions regarding bladder, bowel, sexual intercourse, and gynaecological/obstetric history. When attending an Exercise Physiology appointment, we ask that you wear comfortable clothing you can move well in so that you are unrestricted during a personalised movement assessment.
We will come up with a plan together, with review appointments, home programs, and/or small group classes providing a combination of support for your movement and health goals.
Do I need a referral to see an Exercise Physiologist?
No, a referral is not needed.
Medicare rebates are available if eligible for Chronic Disease Management (CDM) assistance. If you have been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition and require complex care, your GP can provide you with this referral form.
Exercise Physiology treatment rebates are available through most private health insurance funds. We support this and have HICAPS facilities to claim this rebate.
